Stationary bikes when speaking in terms of cardiovascular exercises are second only to treadmills. Stationary Exercise Bikes are popular for many reasons, mostly due to the fact that the ‘motion’ is natural and familiar to most people. While exercising on a Stationary bike you can easily read, watch television or have a conversation with a friend. Low end Stationary Bikes can be found in the $200.00 to $400.00 dollar range while high end models can go for over $3000.00 (these usually come with all the bells and whistles including a complex computer LCD).

Stationary Exercise Bikes are available in 3 three styles: recumbent, semi-recumbent and upright. Each of the 3 models will use one of the 3 methods of supplying resistance: flywheels, magnetic or air (magnetic stationary bikes are generally the most expensive).

Flywheel stationary exercise bikes use a heavy wheel inside the bike. A heavy weighted strap is tightened around the flywheel to provide resistance and an adjustment knob on the control console controls the resistance.

Air resistance stationary exercise bikes utilize large fan blades that are extended from the wheels and as you pedal the wheel spins and the fan blades generate the resistance.

Lastly, magnetic resistance stationary exercise bikes use magnetic resistance and are required to be connected to an electrical outlet. Magnetic bikes are usually the smoothest and quiet during operation of use (they’re also the most expensive).
